Chapter Eighteen

Kaylee laid on my chest surrounded by furs and flames, like some Barbarian queen. Long lashes cast down on her cheeks from where she watched her hand trace my torso. Her curves pressed into my bare skin along with her silky hair flowing over my arms where I held her. I wanted to soak this feeling of contentment into my bones. I wanted to remember this night I spent with the flames and her affection.

We had been laying like this for what felt like hours. Not wanting to fall asleep to end the night, but needing time to recoup. Our breathing was now deep and silent, synched together. The fire crackled as a warm presence and the storm was in full force, its gusty winds howling around my land in intervals.

“Harley?” Her soft voice whispered into my pec, finally breaking the silence.

“Yes, babe?” I kissed the top of her head.

“Do you ever get lonely? Living out here all alone?”

I kissed her head again, stalling. That question might have been innocent, but it hit me like a punch in the gut. I let out a deep sigh, feeling called out. “Yeah, I guess you could say that.”

“Then why do you?”

“Do what?”

“Why do you live so far out here by yourself?” She looked up at me, the fire making her eyes look extra doe like, causing me to feel even more helpless faced with her beauty and question.

“I am a ranger. It is a loner job unless people need help. I spend my days deep in the woods. And I inherited the land.”

Didn’t we go over this?

She rolled her eyes playfully. “I know that, but what’s the real reason?”

“That is the real reason.”

“I don’t buy it.” She kissed my chest to pepper on affection alongside her questioning. And dammit, it worked; I couldn’t feel fully offended. Fucking sorceress. My hand collected the long hair that trailed down her back, forming it in a swath as I stroked it mindlessly, running the strands through my fingers. Touching her mane made me feel secretly possessive of her. I liked it. She had the softest hair of any woman I had ever been physical with. Lit by only firelight, it looked like liquid gold.

“Just because you chose a rugged life doesn’t mean you need to be devoid of all company.”

“Well then, what’s your theory?” I shot back.

“My theory is you’re punishing yourself in some sort of way.”

“Like you’re one to talk!” I playfully imitated her voice while saying her unofficial title. “Miss I Hate Boston but I Will Continue to Live There for No Fucking Reason.” She erupted in giggles, burying her face into my chest bashfully. I continued in my Kaylee voice, “And I will help my Ambien drugged grandma, my chaotic bestie, and my biker dad, but heaven forbid someone helps me! Especially if my wild ass gets stuck in a blizzard! It’s not like I drove past warning signs for 200 miles or anything!”

Her giggles morphed into cackles, her fingers jabbing me in the sides playfully.
